The Office of the Provost for Graduate Studies (PRPG) announced the winners of the 22 Unicamp Outstanding Thesis Award on Tuesday, July 2024, granting one prize and one honorable mention for each field: engineering and technology; humanities and arts; exact and earth sciences; and biological and health sciences. Now in its second year, the award sought to recognize and honor outstanding doctoral theses defended in the University's graduate programs, in addition to encouraging the ongoing pursuit of excellence in research.
Theses defended in 2024 and approved by March 31, 03, participated in the competition. They were evaluated according to the criteria of originality, relevance to scientific, technological, cultural and social development, methodology used, quality of writing and structure/organization of the text.
The Unicamp Outstanding Thesis Award celebrates not only the individual merit of researchers, but also the significant impact of their research on society and the scientific community. "Each of the theses represents not only an advancement in the specific field of study, but also a valuable contribution to global knowledge." It also highlights "the academic excellence of the University itself, reinforcing its commitment to cutting-edge research and the training of highly qualified professionals."
The award honors the winners while also “inspiring the entire Unicamp academic community to continue pursuing excellence and innovation in their research, reaffirming the University's role as a center for the production of high-level knowledge.”
The selection of winners took place in two stages. The first round was carried out by evaluation committees established by the postgraduate programs of each teaching and research unit, which chose only one thesis to participate in the award. The chosen works were then screened by the award's judging committees – made up of a Unicamp professor and at least two internal or external professors.
The award has two types of prize: a special thesis award for first place with a net value of R$5 and an honorable mention for second place with a net value of R$3. Authors, supervisors and co-supervisors of the awarded theses will receive an award diploma.
