PhD student from Hub Viva Bem receives Apple Scholars scholarship in AI.

Matheus Corrêa Lindino, a doctoral student at Hub Viva Bem (Unicamp/Samsung), has been selected for the prestigious Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD Fellowship. The grant recognizes research in artificial intelligence and affective computing focused on monitoring mental health through wearable devices.

Matheus Corrêa Lindino, PhD student at Live Well Hub in Computer Science, with an emphasis on AI and affective computing, was selected for the Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD FellowshipThis award recognizes emerging leaders who develop innovative research in AI and machine learning, centered on human beings. Selection considers factors such as academic trajectory, ability to collaborate, and candidates' commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology.

Partnership for inclusion

Artificial Intelligence Hub for Health and Wellness Live well This is a partnership between the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and Samsung. Our main objective is to promote disruptive AI research for health and well-being, focusing on technological applications for continuous health monitoring of individuals through wearable devices. We seek technological solutions focused on prospective, proactive, and personalized systems (prognosis based on continuous monitoring of the individual's health and definition of therapeutic possibilities from specific individual data), instead of commonly used classic systems of a retrospective, reactive, and generic nature (diagnosis based on pre-existing symptoms and definition of treatment from group data).

Viva Bem is part of Samsung Artificial Intelligence Ecosystem, which integrates the company, universities, and research centers around the world. At Unicamp, the project integrates four teaching and research units: the Institute of Computing, the Gleb Wataghin Institute of Physics, the Faculty of Physical Education, and the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

“Being selected by Apple validates the global relevance of my research. The scholarship offers financial support for my doctorate, direct mentorship with company researchers, and an internship at their headquarters in the US. This will give me access to cutting-edge knowledge, accelerating the development of solutions with real impact and strengthening Brazilian science at this technological frontier.”“Lindino comments.

Technology and Mental Health

In the Viva Bem program, the researcher works in the area of... Anxiety Disorders (A10), investigating how AI can correlate biosignals of smartwatches to mental well-being. His goal is to develop embedded models capable of automatically identifying physiological patterns (such as heart rate and blood pressure) to monitor states of anxiety and stress in real time. "I use AI so that the technology understands not only what we do, but how we feel," explains the doctoral candidate. "The goal is to create systems that detect and monitor emotional health continuously through wearable devices."
