Created in 2005, the CAPES Thesis Award is granted annually and recognizes up to 50 works each year, one for each evaluation area defined by CAPES. The evaluation of the works submitted for obtaining a doctoral degree considers their originality, scientific, technological and social relevance, as well as methodological consistency and rigor in writing. Aspects of innovation and interdisciplinarity are also valued, as well as the impact of publications derived from the research, which demonstrate its contribution to the scientific community. The CAPES Thesis Award also serves as an important indicator of institutional excellence, highlighting postgraduate programs with high-level academic production.
In 2024, Unicamp won four award-winning projects and five honorable mentions, while in 2025 there were three main awards and four honorable mentions, indicating a slight reduction in the total number of recognitions, a movement also noticeable in the number of finalists, which went from nine in 2024 to seven in 2025. Despite this variation, The 2025 edition brought a particularly significant achievement: the university once again received a CAPES Grand Prize for Thesis.The award was given to Lucas Felipe de Lima, from the Postgraduate Program in Chemistry, at the College of Exact Sciences.
